New auction records in Monterey in the slipstream of the Uhlenhaut Coupé?
Last year, the auctions around the Pebble Beach Concours took place, but the atmosphere was still rather subdued. Despite ongoing conflicts around the world, the three auctions by RM/Sotheby's, Gooding & Co and Bonhams are set to become a veritable firework display and generate many records, if the estimates are to be believed.
In total, the three auction houses will bring almost 500 vehicles under the hammer, which are expected to be worth almost USD 500 million in total. On average, this amounts to more than one million American dollars per car. 130 cars were estimated to be worth at least one million USD.
It is also striking that the cars tend to be older than a year ago, on average over 60 years old. The 130 most expensive cars are even older, namely 66 years old. Among the 10 most expensive vehicles, four cars are from the pre-war period and from four manufacturers (Bugatti, Mercedes-Benz, Hispano-Suiza and Talbot-Lago).
The most expensive car, a Ferrari 410 Sport Spider from 1955 (pictured above), is expected to find a new owner for GTO money, namely USD 25 to 30 million.
The Bugatti Type 57SC Atalantefrom 1937 is expected to fetch USD 10 to 12 million and the Hispano-Suiza H6Cfrom 1924 with a wooden body is set to become the most expensive Hispano of all time at USD 8 to 12 million.
So everything is set for new heights. Is this due to the fact that the sale of the Uhlenhaut SL has removed inhibitions and taken the entire super classic market to a new level? Or do the rich collectors simply want to invest money in tangible assets to avoid inflation?
We will know more after next week. We have announced the RM/Sotheby's, Bonhamsand Gooding & Co auctions in detail and will of course report on the results as soon as possible.
