Do we need an electric buggy?
08/17/2022
Volkswagen already had ideas for an electric buggy.
But the ID Buggy did not make it into series production.
Meyer's Manx is further ahead . The company, which has been controlled by an investment company since 2020, has already started a beta testing program with 50 electric buggies; Gregor Habermehl and Thomas Harloff have published a more detailed article on the ams website. That's why we don't want to go into much detail here about the technology (electric motor with 204 hp, modern batteries with 20 or 40 kWh capacity, range 240 or 480 km).
Visually, the Meyers Manx 2.0 EV looks like a buggy from the sixties that has been skillfully transported into the modern age - after all, the dimensions have been adopted almost 1:1. However, underneath the chic shell is modern technology and even some accident protection.
The question that arises for us here, however, is whether you really want to do without the classic Beetle sound and the mechanical feel when driving a buggy and whether it wouldn't make more sense to save a classic buggy from decay, as you are only likely to cover a few hundred kilometers a year with it anyway. And the Meyers Manx 2.0 EV can't save the world with that either. Although you could of course use it all year round and in the city ...
