Oh you blue cap
08/04/2022
From August 1980, Volkswagen supplied the Golf with an LED for the high beam indicator. This would not have been a problem, but the LED was yellow and experienced drivers were used to a blue indicator light for the high beam. However, a blue LED would have been far too expensive, hence the inexpensive yellow version.
However, as many customers complained to Volkswagen, they switched back to a bulb that was covered with a blue cap. This kept the church back in the village. The other LEDs remained unchanged. And the conversion kit was even regularly available from VW: part number 357 919 062.
Today, this is long forgotten and the high beam in modern cars is no longer indicated by a bulb or LED, but as a superimposed symbol in the LCD display, which is there anyway.
