Volkswagen began to completely revamp its product range with the Passat. As the first model, the Passat carried particular weight. Although closely related to the Audi 80, the Wolfsburg variant with a hatchback or estate offered a welcome alternative and ultimately sold better than the Audi. An inexpensive estate car with five doors, plenty of usable space and a kerb weight of just 910 kg? Yes, that was possible in 1973 and even the 1.3-liter engine with 55/60 hp was enough to get the car moving quickly and economically. The VW Passat Variant was the name of the all-rounder and it owed a lot, but not everything, to the Audi 80. It is no coincidence that the Passat Estate became a perennial bestseller. When Volkswagen presented the Passat to the press in May 1973, very few of the writers were really surprised. After all, there had already been rumors of an expected VW derivative at the presentation of the Audi 80 ten months earlier.
