Is the buggy returning?
02/27/2019
It's hard to imagine that over 200,000 buggies once made the world a more colorful and free place. Most of them have disappeared, you hardly see them on the road anymore.
They were killed off by the end of the supply of Volkswagen Beetle chassis and, of course, changes in contemporary tastes.
But precisely what contributed to the end of the buggy movement back then could now lead to a renaissance. At the 89th Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen will present the ID. Buggy, a leisure car based on the electric MEB platform. It will therefore be battery-powered and electric, the buggy of the future. But this is not a pioneering act either, as Citroën has already had an electric Méhari in its range for some time.
An electric buggy can make perfect sense, because you won't be buying it for long distances anyway and the engine noise wasn't the most important selling point back then, although I personally will of course miss the sound of the air-cooled Beetle Boxer.
Incidentally, we dedicated an article to the Meyers Manx Dune Buggy( pictured above) some time ago. And of course there are lots of pictures on the subject of buggies in the Zwischengas archive.
