The British are still happy to shop shortly before Brexit
At the weekend, on February 22, 2019 to be precise, the annual Silverstone Auctions auction was held in Coventry on the occasion of the Race Retro Classic Car Show.
A total of 81 cars went under the hammer, four of which were withdrawn in advance. A total of 49, or 64 percent, were sold. The average price was therefore not quite £ 54,000 (EUR 61,400, CHF 69,900).
From a mainland perspective, there were some "healthy" results. For example, a 1979 VW Golf GTI sold for £ 27,225 (EUR 31,309, CHF 35,665, including premium). However, it was also a relatively early example with a spittoon steering wheel, but already with the new bumpers. The right-hand drive car had only had one owner and had covered 53,000 miles. It has now been resurrected after 20 years of "sleep" and has apparently found a new fan.
A Lotus Elan Sprint DHC from 1972 (pictured above) also sold well. The convertible, painted in the classic Sprint colors of red and white, had been completely restored and has now been handed over to a new enthusiast for £ 45,000 (EUR 51,750, CHF 58,950). Although the seller is unlikely to have recouped his investment, the price is certainly acceptable.
The rather young offer (average age 39 years) did not have it easy with the bidding public, some expensive cars had already been withdrawn before the auction, others only achieved mediocre prices. For example, a Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI was sold for just £ 131,000 (EUR 150,650, CHF 171,610). The right-hand drive car was in good condition and even came with both spoiler variants.
