When does the Triumph TR6 actually have its 50th birthday?
02/19/2019
Car birthdays are one of those things, because it is never clear which date is the valid one. Is it the start of production? The first public appearance? The official press presentation?
People often go back to the date on which the car was first presented.
If you look up the Triumph TR6 on Wikipedia, it says: "The Triumph TR6 was launched in 1968.".
Really? None of the car magazines stored in the Zwischengas magazine seem to mention the TR6 in 1968. However, while sifting through the picture archive, we came across a very early press photo:
If you turn this photo, you will find the following imprint:
This was the "embargo" for the photo and obliged the publisher not to communicate on the Triumph TR6 before January 14, 1969. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the TR6 had its birthday on this date, even though the first examples were built (in complete secrecy) at the end of 1968. They had to be, otherwise the journalists would not have been able to view the car in January 1969.
But we are happy to be proven wrong!
By the way, we are determined to dedicate a detailed report to the TR6 on its 50th birthday, as it is still missing from our article archive.
