Who bids more for the best Ferrari book? (Ferrari in Camera)
More than 1500 books have been written about Ferrari, but few of them are as breathtaking as "Ferrari in Camera". Many consider it to be one of the best works ever produced on Ferrari in motorsport. Everything is just right here: the elegant presentation in a slipcase, the large format, which shows pictures up to 70 x 25 cm, a captivatingly simple layout, magnificent photos from the archive of Englishman Geoffrey Goddard, the gripping texts by historian Doug Nye.
On display are Ferrari racers from 1950 to 1985, driven by the best drivers of their era. The entire fascination of Ferrari from the golden age of motor racing unfolds, from Formula 1 and prototype racing, on the track, in the pits, in the paddock.
Founded in 1993, the Palawan publishing house specializes in high-quality works about cars and motorsport - about Aston Martin and Jaguar, about Ferrari, Lagonda and Bentley, about motorsport pictures by the unmistakable Louis Klemantaski or racing in the 1960s. The motto is: less is more. To date, only 26 titles have been published, most of them in small editions to preserve their exclusive character.
James Knight, book specialist at auction house Bonhams, says: "Palawan books are the benchmark for the whole industry. There are race books aplenty, but very few stand out. Format, layout, photo selection, text quality, workmanship, paper - everything is just right here. The publisher is not aiming for the highest possible profit margin, but for an outstanding product. Palawan books are instant collectors' items and are rarely sold. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, there are only a limited number of each edition, and secondly, owners are extremely reluctant to part with them."
So it is very rare for a volume of "Ferrari in Camera" to emerge from the fog, as noble as an ocean liner. During the Goodwood Revival in 2017, for example, volume 172 went under the hammer at Bonhams and achieved a sale price of 1562 British pounds (EUR 1759, CHF 1987).
Number 662 is now being offered in Switzerland, with a base price of CHF 1800 plus shipping and insurance. The seller wants the auction to be conducted as a blind auction, with interested parties submitting their bids via email without knowing how high the other bids are. The buyer bears all shipping and insurance costs.
