The missed opportunity with the Mercedes-Benz SLC

Around 22 years ago, a coupé version of the Mercedes-BenzSLK was expected (see AMS issue 17/1997, cover story). In the style of the Porsche 968 (with glass dome), the SLC was to compete against the new rivals from BMW (Z3 Coupé, expected for 1998), Audi (TT) and Fiat (Barchetta Coupé).
Well, it was not to come to that. At the 1998 Geneva Motor Show, it was not on show, as had been expected in the summer of 1997. Why is that? The sales figures for the BMW Z3 Coupé did not develop as positively as expected and the Fiat Barchetta Coupé did not appear, nor did the SLC. What a shame, really, as it could be a sought-after classic today ...
I wonder if there were prototypes? We would be happy to report on them (hint to Sindelfingen).
