Car fans once dreamed of top-of-the-range or super sports cars. Since the turn of the millennium, however, hypercars have been regarded as the ultimate in automotive transportation. But whether they offer real driving pleasure is doubtful. To prove this thesis, this article takes you through the development of the sports car up to the present day and shows many of the cars mentioned in pictures.

Car fans once dreamed of top-of-the-range or super sports cars. Since the turn of the millennium, however, hypercars have been regarded as the ultimate in automotive transportation. But whether they offer real driving pleasure is doubtful. Of course, a sports car is expected to deliver a greater level of performance than a sedan that has to transport an entire family. This is because a sports two-seater requires less interior space and can therefore be built to be lighter. This means that its drive system and chassis can be geared towards greater driving dynamics. And above all, its body - and thus its appearance - can be decisively geared towards what makes a sports car: visible aerodynamics, i.e. low and elongated, as if it were driving away by itself.
