On August 19, 2012, the 62nd Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance took place, one of the most important events of the year for collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
Pebble Beach, normally the 18th hole of a world-class golf course on the shores of the Californian Pacific, was transformed for one day into an automotive Mecca to showcase some of the most beautiful and elegant vehicles ever built.
Over 200 cars, divided into 28 categories/classes, were lined up, cleaned, evaluated and, above all, viewed in detail. The beautiful, elegant and original cars were awarded prizes in a highly professional atmosphere and under mixed weather conditions. Truly rare automobiles were brought together for the 62nd Pebble Beach Concours, selected from well over 1,000 applications.
The winner ("Best of Show") was the Mercedes-Benz 680 S Saoutchik Torpedo from 1928, a car in which outstanding German vehicle technology and French coachbuilding complement each other perfectly. The Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Figoni Coupé, which had won the overall title in Villa d'Este, was also nominated for "Best of Show", but was beaten by the Saoutchik Mercedes.
Three perspectives will be used to describe the impressions and atmosphere on site. Also to show how different the views of a visitor, a participant and a judge are.
The visitor/observer Martin Schatzmann (deputy editor-in-chief of Automobil Revue)
Once again, fog hangs over the manicured lawn of "The Lodge at Pebble Beach" on Sunday morning. Only for a brief moment does the blanket lift and let the sun through, otherwise the mood is gloomy, in stark contrast to the general mood of the people on the course.
The participants and visitors to the Concours d'Elegance are in fact not in a gloomy mood, they are happy, enjoying looking at the beautiful classics and eagerly awaiting the results, which will be announced in the afternoon.
The jury is of the highest caliber, with some of the brightest minds in automotive design and engineering of the current era represented, including Shiro Nakamura of Nissan, Gordon Wagener of Mercedes, Andrea Zagato, Martin Smith of Ford, Jochen Mass, Henrik Fisker, Fabrizio Giugiaro, Ian Callum of Jaguar, Ulrich Bez of Aston Martin; Franz-Josef Paefgen, Sir Stirling Moss, etc.
The parade of vehicles begins as early as 4:30 in the morning. By six o'clock in the morning, there are already a lot of people on the site. By midday, the site is full to bursting, the cars barely recognizable in the crowd. But the atmosphere is relaxed and there is an air of admiration and enjoyment in the air.
Special classes are the AC and the Cobra (in memory of Shelby), the Mercer, the Saoutchik cars and the Maharaja cars. The Maharaja cars were allowed to line up on the podium for a special run-through before the awards ceremony took place. These are particularly beautiful cars, some of which are still in Indian ownership and are equipped with period accessories, such as two rifles.
Three other categories deserve special mention here: on the one hand, the two categories with largely original - and unrestored - cars that really did not suffer from a lack of patina. On the other hand, the "American Sport Customs" category, which was dedicated to unique pieces from the thirties to fifties that were put on their feet, or rather wheels, by "do-it-yourselfers" and self-appointed car builders/designers, was interesting. In any case, these cars were not lacking in creativity and expressiveness and can be seen as a real enrichment for the otherwise rather elitist image of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. These cars in particular were applauded no less than some of the other million-dollar showpieces during the legendary drive over the wooden bridge to the trophy reception.
With the "Best of Show" winner, a pre-war car was once again the overall winner, as has usually been the case since the Concours d'Elegance began over 50 years ago.
Participant Christian Jenny (at the wheel of an elegant Delahaye)
It was still dark at 6 a.m., a few seagulls were screeching, a cool, damp day was approaching, a light breeze was blowing from the ocean, causing wafts of mist to dance back and forth over the large, still empty grounds.
We were among the first to roll onto the wet grass behind an usher's golf cart, flashes were already spraying from the numerous cameras of the media people, a shout here and there, a brief greeting to an acquaintance standing along the way.
The Delahaye M135 from 1949 that I was driving is certainly one of the most beautiful open-top two-seaters ever coachbuilt by Jacques Saoutchik. It was completely white with a tight-fitting fabric roof and a muted beige interior.
The car belongs to a friend of mine and, together with eleven other exceptional cars, it competed in the "Saoutchik" class.
It felt good to drive onto the course and set up "his" car in the concours park, knowing that the invitation to the big show alone was an extraordinary honor.
As soon as the car was in position, the engine could be switched off. Now you could let your eyes, now accustomed to the twilight, wander around. It was done, the car was ready and would henceforth be known as the "Pebble Beach Car".
I could spend a long time daydreaming about the Delahaye, the flamboyant Saoutchiks and their magnificent position on the shores of the Pacific. Instead, a short, prosaic list will document the impressions that had an impact on me in just a few hours.
"Impressive" is just the right word. As a long-time, almost "hardened" Pebble Beach visitor (and participant), I was overcome this year by the feeling that I had never seen so many outstanding classic cars together at this legendary location.
Two classes that immediately caught my eye were those labeled "Maharaja" and "Maharaja Rolls-Royce", featuring fifteen automobiles from the fleets of former Indian princes. The Brooke 25/30 HP Swan Car from 1910, complete with rotating head, neck and plumage carved from the bodywork wood, stood out in terms of imagery. Once belonging to the Maharajah of Nabha, it now adorns the Dutch Louwman Museum in Wassenaar, from where it was brought to California. The swan car is a peculiar vehicle that may have been used solely for display purposes, as it was hardly suitable for longer journeys. A Rolls-Royce 20 HP Barker Tourer from 1924 was accompanied by the owner, the Maharana of Udaipur, herself.
For fans of sporty post-war cars, there was a class for AC Ace with Bristol engine and a class dedicated exclusively to the 50th anniversary of Carroll Shelby's Cobra, in addition to the two classes "Ferrari Grand Touring" and "Ferrari Competition". Particularly impressive here was the 1962 Shelby Cobra 260 Prototype from the private trust of the company founder.
A striking early post-war sports car was the 1949 Jaguar XK 120 Alloy, which had once been personally presented to movie favorite Clark Gable by [Sir] William. In addition to the Delahaye, a highly significant Delage 2LCV Grand Prix racing car with an impressive racing history was on display from Switzerland.
The most beautiful of them all? After a long evaluation, the jury of the Concours d'Elegance decided that the most beautiful of the beautiful was the mouse-grey open 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S dressed by Saoutchik - an impressive vehicle of unusual dimensions that you first have to get to grips with. It is worth marveling at, but from an aesthetic point of view, it is at least a small question mark for this writer.
My personal choice for the most beautiful would be either the Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Franay Cabriolet from 1948, or again a Delahaye - not the open two-seater we brought with us, as we are keeping a low profile. What is meant is the Delahaye 135 MS Coupé from 1947 with a beautifully drawn body by Langenthal.
The judge Peter Larsen (in the Saoutchik category)
The vehicle judging in Pebble Beach is carried out at a high professional level. The organization is excellent, nothing goes wrong. Judging takes place on two levels, first at the individual category level, where three judges pay particular attention to originality and authenticity. The so-called "Honorary Judges" then determine the overall winner at a second level, paying particular attention to design, styling and elegance, and present the awards and the "Best of Show" title.
To win an award, the vehicle must be able to drive onto the podium under its own power! In general, the fact that the vehicles should not be mere exhibits is important, so even minor modifications that serve to improve driveability and usability are not penalized with point deductions.
When evaluating a vehicle within the category, the three points judges proceed meticulously. Each car starts with the maximum possible 100 points. Around 20 aspects such as glass, interior, engine, etc. are assessed. Deductions are made for deviations from originality, over-restoration, lack of original substance or technical defects. For example, if a car cannot be started, the driver is given another twenty minutes to solve the problem. If the car still does not start, a significant point deduction is given.
The work of the "jury" begins a few weeks before the event. This is when the documents for the vehicles to be judged arrive. The individual experts, all long-time experts in the field, then read up on the individual vehicles and make a note of possible weak points or things that need to be checked on site. Depending on the category, different aspects may be important. Coachbuilder Saoutchik, for example, often used nickel silver ("German Silver"), a copper-nickel-zinc alloy with high corrosion resistance, strength and a silver-like appearance, in the construction of his vehicles, which is often replaced by chrome during restorations due to its poor availability, which results in minus points in the Pebble Beach assessment. Incidentally, no points are deducted for color combinations that do not correspond to the delivery condition. Even minor damage to the paintwork caused by driving (stone chips) is not rated negatively.
The category judges have around 20 minutes per car, starting at 08:30 and ending at around 11:00. The three best vehicles in each category are selected, and the category winner is a candidate for the "Best of Show" trophy.
The work of the judges is important, responsible and at the same time very rewarding. The discussions with owners and fellow judges complement the existing expertise and the Pebble Beach organization ensures that the work is really fun.
A Pebble Beach winner is always an outstanding automobile, the work of the judges ensures that everything is coherent and that expertise and care has been applied to the restoration. In this sense, Pebble Beach can certainly boast of being the leading competition of its kind.
Vehicles and prizes/awards
The list below shows all vehicles participating in the Concours, sorted by number. Vehicles that were entered out of competition ("exhibit only") are marked with an "*". Prizes/awards won are noted for each vehicle. "Class Award 2." means, for example, second prize in a class. All information without guarantee.
Almost all award winners are shown in the separate picture gallery "The award-winning classic cars of Pebble Beach 2012" .
