Do we need more retro sports cars?
They come and go, but hardly any retro sports cars remain successful for long. Now an entrepreneur apparently wants to try to build on the good Facel-Vega days, i.e. the fifties and sixties.
The design of a luxury coupé with a 558 hp V8 engine certainly looks like a successful attempt, but if you know how difficult it is today to build up a new car brand or revive an old one, then you can only marvel at the courage, especially as a V8 engine doesn't exactly fit perfectly into modern times. But of course it fits the Facel Vega brand; after all, the famous coupés were also powered by (American) V8 engines at the time , as they were among the fastest cars of the day and were even popular with Grand Prix drivers.
Around 1200 large Facel Vega were built at the time, but the company failed with the small Facel, the Facelia.
It is doubtful whether it is easier to build a sports car today than it was back then, as customers today are extremely demanding, licensing regulations are strict and the authorities are unyielding. So it will be interesting to see how far the new Facel Vega gets.
