Actually, "500" is not a special number, and yet you see it in a surprising number of type designations. Want some examples? Fiat 500, Ferrari 500 Superfast, Ford Galaxie 500, Maico 500, Shelby 500 GT, FMR TG500, Mitsubishi 500, Chevrolet Corvair 500, Ford Fairlane 500, Ford Torino 500, Dodge D-500 and of course a whole range of Mercedes-Benz models. In the case of Ford, by the way, it was mostly equipment lines that were given the "500" lettering; for other cars, it was the engine capacity (or a tenth of the engine capacity).
