Stainless steel bodies, long before DeLorean
05/31/2020
The most famous car with a stainless steel body was clearly the DeLorean DMC-12 from the early 1980s. It was built almost 9000 times. However, it was by no means the first stainless steel car.
In the late sixties and early seventies, a Porsche 911 with a stainless steel body and a BMW 2800 CS Coupé with a stainless steel body were already available in Germany. We have already reported on this once .
A Ford Thunderbird was also built in 1960 with a stainless steel body; the company behind it was "Allegheny Ludlum Steel".
But this Thunderbird was not the only stainless steel car from Allegheny. A 1936 Ford Deluxe and a 1967 Lincoln Continental Convertible were also fitted with a stainless steel body.
These three cars will be auctioned by Worldwide Auctioneers on behalf of Allegheny in September 2020.
But even these three cars were not the earliest stainless steel cars, as Allegheny is said to have built three Ford Model A with stainless steel as early as 1931. Unlike the Thunderbird, Deluxe and Continental, however, the Model As have not been seen for a long time, and according to Hemmings author Daniel Strohl, more than one of the three cars is said not to have survived.
