The first Porsche 918 that was never born
06/18/2020
In 1982, the Porsche944 was still brand new, the 944 Turbo was still awaited and rumors were already circulating about an entry-level Porsche. The magazine "auto motor und sport" showed what this could look like on the cover and inside the magazine.
In issue 14/1982 of "auto motor und sport" , the following was noted:
" For example, a small Porsche for beginners is currently in the planning phase, for which the designation 918 is intended and with which Porsche intends to stand up to the growing competition from relatively inexpensive Japanese sports cars, particularly on the American market.
In order to be able to keep up even halfway here, the idea is not to create a thoroughbred Porsche, but rather a two-seater designed with extensive use of mechanical components from the VW Scirocco. For the time being, however, there are no more than initial studies of such a Porsche for young people - the newcomer is not expected before 1985 ."
Well, we know that the 918 never materialized. But there was of course a Porsche 918 later on, but this was a super sports car and 31 years later.
All in all, however, the ams creators and Mark Stehrenberger were not so wrong with their premonitions; the Sierra, the BMW E30 and the baby Benz on the covercertainly looked very similar to the drawings.
