Still the first tires after more than 40 years
It's actually hard to believe. This Audi 50 was standing in front of us and it was fitted with Swiss-made Firestone tires. As is well known, production at the Pratteln plant stopped in 1978, after which Firestone tires "made in Switzerland" were no longer manufactured. The closure of the production plantwas quite a shock at the time, but the industry in general was in a bad way.
So the Audi 50 still had the first tires on it, and after 36,000 km they didn't seem to be worn out at all, ready for the next 40 years!
This may not be ideal in terms of driving safety, but from the point of view of originality it certainly has its appeal. After all, more modern tires usually no longer look like the tires from back then. And seeing the original tires on a 41-year-old classic car is really something special.
P.S. In any case, the old tires survived our test drive without any problems. We have already published the driving report ...
