Originality is not the highest criterion for tires (question of the week)
Safety dictates that at some point the old (and original) tires have to be replaced with newer ones, even on a classic car that is rarely driven. Then, at the latest, the question arises as to whether you should only fit original dimensions and tire patterns in the interests of originality or whether you should go for wider, flatter, more modern tires. Although there are some suppliers today who are committed to tradition and largely offer tire patterns as they were back then and can also provide the size/width ratios of the past, these tires are often quite expensive and in some cases inferior to more modern variants.
In the last " Question of the Week" , we therefore wanted to know from our readers how they feel about buying tires for their classic/youngtimer and what they prefer. The result was clear!
69% of the 417 readers who responded are prepared to make a compromise in terms of dimensions and tire pattern as long as the new, modern tires still fit the car reasonably well.
22%, however, insist on tires that are true to the original, i.e. fit the correct dimensions and a pattern that was already available at the time.
Only just 7% don't give a damn about what tires were once fitted to their car and opt for optimum grip and modern tires, which can sometimes be significantly wider and flatter than the original.
It is actually surprising that not even a quarter of all classic car drivers consider the tire appearance of the time to be really important.
