What drivers used to know - knocking (on the instruments) can help
If you are driving an old car, take a look at the fuel gauge or the oil pressure gauge and notice that the tank is empty or there is no oil pressure, there is no need to panic straight away. Instruments of the past are mechanically complex devices and sometimes they simply need a prompt to start working. Especially after restarting the car.
A gentle tap frees the needles while driving and the display is correct again, fuel is available again and the oil pressure levels off within the usual range.
Of course, this tip is of no use with modern LCD/computer displays ...
