Driving pleasure before originality - electronic ignitions are okay (Question of the week)
A classic ignition system with distributor, rotor and breaker requires maintenance. Ignition timing and closing angle need to be adjusted regularly to ensure good engine running. Many classic car owners have therefore converted their classic cars to contactless electronic ignition. As well as requiring significantly less maintenance, it can also improve engine running thanks to a precisely programmed map. Of course, this is not true to the original - and is often the only bit of electronics in an otherwise completely analog automobile.
But should you really sacrifice originality and convert your classic car to contactless electronic ignition? This is what we wanted to know from Zwischengas readers in a " Question of the Week" and we were surprised by their answers.
In fact, over half of the more than 640 respondents see no problem in reducing maintenance costs, improving engine running and sacrificing some originality in the process.
Around 35 percent can imagine a conversion, either if the old ignition distributor is defective and/or no original replacement is available.
10.6 percent cannot imagine replacing the original ignition distributor with a contactless electronic ignition, because the real driving experience can only be achieved with technology in its original condition.
3.7 percent could not identify with any of the answers given.
