Mineral oil most popular with classic car and youngtimer drivers (Question of the week)
08/16/2021
The oil film has a major influence on the longevity of the engine. The right choice of oil type and viscosity is correspondingly important. However, this is not an easy task, as developments in engine oils in particular are constantly advancing. New alloys have been developed time and again, and in addition to purely mineral-based oils, semi-synthetic and fully synthetic variants have been added. But which types of oil do classic car and youngtimer drivers actually use? We wanted to find out with a " question of the week " , which was: What type of engine oil do you use?
539 Zwischengas readers responded and 45.6 percent chose mineral oil. In fact, the proportion of mineral oil users could be even higher, as 25.2 percent mentioned that they would adhere exactly to the manufacturer's specifications (oil type, viscosity), while the 45.6 percent mentioned use mineral oil, but higher viscosities as appropriate.
11.1 percent were in favor of semi-synthetic oil, while 10 percent always pour fully synthetic oil into the engine.
3.2 percent are apparently less picky, using whatever is available.
And finally, 4.8% could not come up with an answer.
One reader also wrote to us:
"I/we only use fully synthetic 10W60 from Castrol, but only in completely rebuilt/overhauled engines. Engines that have not yet been overhauled should only be filled with the specified oil specifications. Reason for this: The modern fully synthetic oils would dissolve out of the "sack/sludge holes" everything that has settled there. This could/would then lead to clogging of oil bores, channels, etc. and ultimately to engine damage. Therefore, modern oils should only be filled when the engine has been rebuilt."
It should be noted that semi-synthetic oils can certainly be used instead of purely mineral engine oils if they have been optimized for older cars.
Here is the graphical analysis of the survey:
Of course, we have already asked the next "question of the week " . We now want to know whether Zwischengas readers prefer vehicles with low mileage when buying classic/youngtimers.
And of course you can still read all the results of the previous "Questions of the Week " .
