Maintenance of classic cars/youngtimers is taken seriously (question of the week)
Modern drivers can hardly imagine how time-consuming the maintenance and care of cars was 30, 50 or 100 years ago. Grease had to be applied, fluids and consumable parts had to be changed frequently, often at three- or four-digit mileage intervals. The instructions were usually documented in detail in the vehicle handbook.
Today, however, the same cars are used differently (and usually less intensively), and the lubricating fluids and consumables have also changed. How does this affect owners' behavior with regard to servicing and maintaining their cars? We wanted to find out more and asked the following " question of the week" : Do you maintain your classic car according to the original manufacturer's instructions?
264 Zwischengas readers responded. And they don't take their car's maintenance requirements lightly. In fact, just over 60 percent of respondents stated that they follow the instructions in the vehicle manual or even intervene more often than necessary. These 60 percent are divided into 6.4 percent who maintain their car without restriction and exactly according to the specifications, 11 percent who carry out maintenance services primarily according to the specified mileage information and 16.3 percent who primarily look at compliance with the time intervals. 26.9 percent service more frequently than specified.
Around 35 percent take a more relaxed view of the specifications in the maintenance regulations. 20.5 percent service less frequently because they believe that modern oils and greases allow this. 14 percent trust their instincts and 0.4 percent miss the odd service due to negligence.
For the sake of completeness, it should also be mentioned that 4.5 percent did not agree with any of the answers given.
