Why "Top Gun: Maverick" is also something for classic movie lovers
The movie "Top Gun: Maverick" was delayed in its cinema premiere. But that wasn't really a problem - after all, it is the sequel to the 1986 film "Top Gun", starring Tom Cruise, who was about 24 years old at the time. He played a jet military pilot and there were some impressive flying scenes back then. Oh yes, and he rode a Kawasaki GPZ 900 Ninja, one of the fastest motorcycles of the 1980s.
Now, 36 years later, "Top Gun: Maverick" flickers across the screen, not a remake, but the second part, so to speak, which simply takes place much later. The main actor is once again Tom Cruise, now 60 years old. And he shows the youngsters in the cockpit again, which also pleases the seniors. But, even better, he still rides (more or less) the same Kawasaki GPZ 900, even if only in the opening scene. Later, he switches to the modern H2; even a Tom Cruise has to move with the times (and what the sponsors want).
The filmmakers also stayed true to the brand of car, with Pete "Maverick" Mitchell's lady of the heart driving a Porsche. Instead of the 356 Speedster as in the first part, it is now a 911 F model (see picture above).
But what made me nostalgic the most in the movie was the test flight in the Mach 10 flight prototype. When Mitchell takes off in this super airplane, he is confronted with state-of-the-art computer displays, but handles a really nostalgic toggle switch, like those found in many classic cars.
