Lends wings

It was well known that the winged Plymouth Road Runner Superbirds can achieve quite high prices. However, the USD 1.65 million that chassis RM23R0A172589 fetched at the recent Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas was still a surprise.
However, it was also one of only 135 Superbirds built with a Hemi engine. With a four-speed manual gearbox (58 examples) instead of the three-speed Toqueflite (77 examples), it might have fetched even more. The car is the 1723rd Road Runner Superbird built in 1935 and has been extensively restored. Particularly important in the US scene with such mass-produced rarities: the Plymouth being auctioned corresponds to the delivery condition stated on the "Fender Tag" right down to the paintwork in the color "Tor Red" and the 15-inch "Rally Wheels".
Nevertheless: in Europe, the bids would hardly have gone that high. For the same money, you could get a Ferrari F40 or two Maserati Ghibli Spiders in this country, but the size of their rear spoilers would not be able to compete with a Plymouth Road Runner Superbird. On top of that, a Ferrari 40 is ten times more common than a Hemi Superbird, with 1315 built.
The pictures are also available in larger size for all those who would like to inspect the car more closely.
