Summary
Of the many cars that played a role in James Bond films, the Mercury Cougar is probably not one of the best known, even though it made longer appearances than the Lotus Esprit Turbo, for example. The first two generations of the Cougar were built for four years, combining sportiness with luxury and achieving high sales figures, to which the Bond film probably contributed very little. This vehicle report tells the story of the early Mercury Cougar and the special example from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".

Diana Rigg, who many fans of fast-paced TV series remember as Emma Peel from "The Avengers" at the wheel of a Lotus Elan, died on September 10, 2020. Almost even better known, however, was her appearance as Teresa di Vicenzo in the 1969 film adaptation of Ian Fleming's James Bond novel "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". In it, she played a bored Contessa and drove an open-top Lancia, at least in the original book. In the movie, it became a Mercury Cougar XR-7 Convertible. At the sixth New York International Motor Show, which presented a veritable firework display of show cars and studies from April 21 to 29, 1962, a Ford Cougar 406 caused quite a stir. It was a dream car with electromechanically opening gullwing doors and a 6.7 liter V8 engine. The dashboard was inspired by a modern airliner, the headlights were retractable and the car was just 1.26 meters high.
