Unusual cars call for unusual articles. A US battleship like the Mercury Monterey was about as rare in Europe in 1958 as a self-possessed fried fish at an Elvis concert. So instead of a test editor, four (fictitious) driver characters were given the task of testing and evaluating the "car robot". Empty tables with chairs on them, a lonely truck driver in the far corner, the monotonous hum of a busy bean machine overhead. The waitress at the counter hisses as she pours hot coffee into the cups, yawning. Four people are sitting at the only set table; they speak a strange mishmash of German, English and French, but they still seem to understand each other well. Outside in the deserted parking lot stands the main character of the story, a Ford Mercury Monterey. The first rays of the sun rising over the forest are already conjuring up bright highlights on his body).
