Unusual cars call for unusual articles. A US battleship like the Mercury Monterey was about as rare in Europe in 1958 as a self-possessed fried fish at an Elvis concert. So instead of a test editor, four (fictitious) driver characters were given the task of testing and evaluating the "car robot". The Mercurys of 1959 were elegant, dignified - and unsuccessful. Even today, with their comparatively simple shape, they are lost in the collective memory between Cadillac rear fins and Chevrolet radiator grilles. A particularly rare representative of its vintage is the wood-trimmed luxury estate called Colony Park, of which just under 6000 were built. We tell the story of the unjustly failed 1959 Mercurys and show many photos of an original Colony Park.
Of the many cars that played a role in James Bond films, the Mercury Cougar is probably not one of the best known, even though it made longer appearances than the Lotus Esprit Turbo, for example. The first two generations of the Cougar were built for four years, combining sportiness with luxury and achieving high sales figures, to which the Bond film probably contributed very little. This vehicle report tells the story of the early Mercury Cougar and the special example from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".
