In 1948, less than 100,000 Volkswagens had been produced; exports had only just begun. But the car was already proving to be quite mature. Nevertheless, hardly anyone would have bet that 21 million VW Beetles would one day be produced. And probably not even those lucky ones who were able to buy a new Volkswagen back then would have believed it. This driving report is about a very early VW Type 11 from 1948 and shows it in current and historical pictures, supplemented by sales literature and operating instructions.

"The bodywork is the result of lengthy aerodynamic studies carried out at great expense. With its refined, simple lines, it looks very elegant and combines the requirements of aerodynamics with the taste of the public in a practical way. The drag coefficient should be around 0.3, probably not least thanks to the flat underside of the car..." Probably very few readers of these sentences would guess an early Volkswagen as the basis for the description. That's how times change. And if everything had been correct, the 1948 VW Beetle would probably have run faster than the 99 km/h measured by Automobil Revue in its 3000 km endurance test.
