Driving pleasure versus quantities
12/14/2018
Of course, we know that the valuation of vehicles is based, among other things, on the number of units produced. Nevertheless, sometimes you have to wonder how much the prices diverge.
Let's take the Lancia Stratos as an example . When I first looked into it, a Stratos, of which barely 500 were built, cost about the same as a Ferrari 308 GTB/GTS , of which 12,000 were produced.
Today, a good Stratos can easily cost six to ten times as much as a 308 GTB/GTS, with exceptions proving the rule.
Little has actually changed in terms of driving pleasure over the last twenty years, both cars are a lot of fun to drive, albeit with different characteristics. In the Stratos, you never forget that you are actually sitting in a rally car in disguise, even if it is a Stradale. In the Ferrari 308 GTS, which is intended to cover a much broader range of applications, from cruiser to granturismo cornering artist, the driving pleasure is certainly not neglected either, especially as the eight-cylinder mid-engined sports car is basically a descendant of the Dino 246 GT/GTS, which in turn contributed the drivetrain to the Stratos.
To cut a long story short, they are both fun, but at very different prices these days. And Thomas Magnum would certainly not have found a place in a Stratos ...
