Classic pearls of the future - Porsche 997 Sport Classic
12/23/2018
It was actually a Porsche dealer's dream. Unveiled at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 2009, the Porsche 997 Sport Classic was sold out after just 48 hours. Customers were practically snatching the car out of the dealers' hands.
After all, 250 of them were built. The retro look obviously appealed to Porsche enthusiasts! The car wasn't cheap, though; you could have bought a 911 Turbo for the same money (EUR 201,682, incl. VAT). But while these normally depreciated in value, the 997 Sport Classic is now traded at prices far above the original price at the time.
The Sport Classic was only available in one color, namely light grey. The limited edition special model differed from its brothers in many ways, but above all in the duck tail, which was based on the Carrera RS spoiler from 1972/73.
The wheels were reminiscent of the Fuchs rims of the seventies. The Sport Classic was the only 997 with rear-wheel drive and a wide rear end.
The interior of the car was also significantly different, even the gearshift had been redesigned. Special seats, trim and other changes set the extensively equipped Sport Classic apart from the mass-produced version.
There was also an addition in terms of performance. 408 hp instead of the usual 385 hp was on offer and could also be heard thanks to the modified exhaust system.
All 250 Sport Classic models were delivered with a manual gearbox, and the shorter gear travel ensured an even crisper gearshift feel.
The 911 Sport Classic really was a convincing package and was actually already a "neo classic" when it appeared at the IAA.
