How Porsche revealed the secret of the superiority of the Type 356 in 1955
12/21/2013
In 1955, Porsche still had to explain why Porsche sports cars were better than others.
The sales brochure for the Type 356 of that year naturally also included atmospheric pictures of the streamlined sports car, but the main part was a four-page spread explaining the secret of the Porsche 356's superiority.
To this end, a whole series of people and car developments were "brought up". Of course, Prof. Dr.Ing. h.c. F. Porsche was portrayed, of course, but Ferry Porsche, Karl Rabe and Erwin Komenda also received due attention.
And the cars? Well, the Prinz-Heinrich car (1912), an early lightweight racing car developed by Porsche (1902), the Cisitalia 12-cylinder racing car(1946), the VW forerunner (1931/1933), the VW Beetle (1938), the Mercedes Benz T 80 world record car, the Auto Union racing car of the 750 kg formula (1934) and the Auto Union Vollstromliner (1937) are mentioned, a truly impressive gallery of ancestors.
The original wording of the brochure reads: "The Type 356 is the sum of all design experience. It is said to look like a racing car, so low, so catty-cornered. There is a lot of truth in that. This elegant and comfortable touring car bears the Porsche face that has been unforgotten on the world's racetracks for twenty years."
The brochure is of course available in the Zwischengas archive.
