November Rain and Water of Love
12/19/2013
The rock band "Guns and Roses" once recorded the song "November Rain" and it fits perfectly with the images of pre-war vintage cars in a clearly rainy gravel pit.
Driving through deep pools of water is notoriously dangerous. The term "aquaplaning" refers to a physical phenomenon that involves the tire floating on a film of water on a wet road surface. When aquaplaning occurs, a wedge of water is pushed under the tire contact patch, leading to a loss of grip.
In my pictures, the vehicles have already lost far more than the normal grip. They are already dancing to the song "Water of Love" by the band "Dire Straits".
Water is not only great fun for children, even seasoned men obviously like to frolic in pools of water. The drivers in the Toyota Celica and Lancia Delta Integrale are real "warm showers" compared to the two drivers in their pre-war racing cars.
At the photo shoot for Bernhard Brägger and I's book "Die schnellen Zwanzigerjahre" (The Fast Twenties), we saw the hard-boiled older guys with their "floating" cars in a gravel pit in the Swabian Alb.
Their satisfaction after several hours of dirty work was written all over their faces after a cleansing shower, coffee and cake.
The Celica and Integrale were quite different. A large puddle in Hinwil invited them to drive through it and that's how the "pull-alongs" came about. Impressive pictures for sure, but relatively emotionless compared to pre-war society.
