How Ford advertising made the Mustang a bestseller
12/09/2013
Advertising played a large part in the success of the Ford Mustang in the sixties. TV commercials ran on all the major television stations and the magazines were full of Mustang advertisements. Ford's marketing strategists also came up with a few ideas to whet people's appetites.
There was the story of Desmond, for example, who swapped his Persian cat for a Mustang.
And there was Wolfgang, who had given spinet concerts for a small circle of friends before buying his Mustang, but afterwards couldn't save himself from meeting women (picture above).
In another advertisement, Ford recommended the Mustang with "Select Shift" (automatic transmission) instead of a couple's therapy.
When Ford received the "Tiffany Award for Excellence in American Design" with the Mustang, a correspondingly elegant advertising campaign was of course immediately launched.
And in 1968, Sidney was made the lifesaver of three bathing beauties, all of whom were better swimmers than he was, but were probably desperate for a lift in the new Mustang Fastback.
