Are the Austrians more classic car-friendly than the Swiss?
Yesterday, the Swiss Classic Car Association SHVF presented a new study on classic cars in Switzerland. The data was collected in the second half of 2019 and the methodology was based on an Austrian study conducted in 2017/2018. The results can therefore be compared accordingly.
However, it should be noted that the Austrian study was carried out in 2017/2018, when hardly anyone was talking about the "Green Deal" and climate movements.
It seems that Austrians love old cars and motorcycles, tractors and commercial vehicles more than the Swiss.
While an estimated 3.2 million Swiss people (with a similar total population) see classic cars/veterans as a cultural asset that should be preserved, the figure in Austria is 4.6 million.
While 2.8 million Swiss people are happy when they see a classic car drive by, the figure in Austria is 4.2 million.
There are of course many other differences between the classic car countries of Switzerland and Austria. For example, a classic car in Zurich, Basel, Geneva and the like is worth an average of CHF 63,000, while in the land of the Viennese and Salzburgers it is worth EUR 23,000, or around CHF 25,000. The distance driven per year is similar: 790 km in Switzerland, 700 km in Austria.
