Mono or not mono? Three Ferrari Testarossa under the hammer
07/25/2020
Ferrari built the 7177 Testarossa from 1984 to 1991. This makes this car one of the most successful creations of the Pininfarina-Ferrari marriage ever.
Opinions differ when it comes to deciding which Testarossa to give preference to. Ferrari modified the wide coupé several times.
Until around the beginning of 1987, the cars were delivered with a high-mounted mirror, these variants are called "Monospecchio".
Then conventional mirrors were fitted, but the central locking wheels, also known as "Monodado", characterized the next versions.
These then disappeared in mid-1988 and made way for conventional five-bolt wheels, which were no longer fitted with TRX tires like the majority of the previous models. At the same time, the suspensions were also revised.
In the past, the highest prices were paid for the "Monospecchio", which is also a "Monodado", as it is well known that the early examples of a model usually achieve higher prices in sales.
RM now has one example from each generation on offer at the American " Open Roads North America" auction . And interestingly, the estimated values are exactly the opposite. The 1991 Testarossa has the highest estimate, namely USD 130,000 to 160,000, while the 1987 Testarossa with the central locks has an estimate of USD 120,000 to 140,000, and the 1985 Monospecchio is expected to fetch USD 95,000 to 120,000.
So is it a topsy-turvy world? Perhaps, but there are some minor and some major differences. For example, the 1991 Testarossa (pictured above) is painted white, which is reminiscent of the Miami Vice Testarossa. Does that explain the difference? Probably not, but rather the unusually low mileage of only 6890 miles driven.
We have of course already announced the American auction , which will be running online for a few more days. You can check the current status of the auction at any time on the RM website . As expected, the 1991 is currently the highest bidder, followed by the 1987 and the 1985 ...
