From ugly duckling to proud swan

Things were not going well for Alfa Romeoin 1984, debts were pressing and there was no money for investment. But that didn't stop the brave men in Milan from working on new models. One of these was the upcoming Alfa Romeo 164, designed by Pininfarina.
The prototypes spotted on the road and shown in the magazine "Auto Motor und Sport" in the second half of 1984 would have been hard to guess that a veritable beauty was in the making.
But the new saloon, presented in 1987, three years later, won over even the harshest critics. Despite its front-wheel drive, the Alfa Romeo 164 was accepted as a genuine Alfa, which was certainly also due to the magnificent engines under the hood.
We published a longer report on the Alfa Romeo 1964 some time ago. As a former 164 owner myself, I naturally have many memories of the car with the beautiful sound.
