Speed limits and speed cameras to ensure compliance are not a new achievement. Even 60 years ago, drivers in the States were apparently monitored electronically and penalized for exceeding the speed limit, as Automobil Revue reported at the time.
And even then, there was obviously a debate about whether speed limits were only there to make money from fines (and bail) afterwards.
There were also hidden speed checks, so-called speed traps, even back then. The devices (picture from 1963) were also comparatively compact back then and could easily be hidden behind bushes.
