When you still drove by feel ...
06/11/2015
It wasn't so long ago that you automatically slowed down to a sensible speed when entering a village and took bends by feel. There was no need for a speed sign, you simply drove according to your own experience and the circumstances. And you didn't constantly look at your speedometer, but at the road.
Today it's completely different. Without a digital speedometer, cruise control and constant scanning of the roadside for prohibition and information signs, you're practically already one foot in jail or at least risking considerable fines. While your gut feeling tells you that you are driving on a wide and clear road, for example, the sign at the side of the road tells you that the speed limit is 30 km/h. In the past, there were far fewer signs and notices.
In the past, there were far fewer signs and prohibition signs and drivers were expected to be more mature. Monitoring took place sporadically and selectively.
Well, to be fair, it has to be said that the fewer cars back then were also less fast. Who would have been in danger of driving 120 or more on a country road in a Beetle? Today, even an inexpensive small car can easily reach 180 km/h and accelerate to 100 km/h in less than 10 seconds. But the people sitting in them have no time to think, because they have to make sure that they comply with all the well-monitored laws, .... when they are not texting or making settings on the navigation system ... (of course, this distraction didn't exist back then either)
