Which one would they have bought?
03/09/2020
Among other things, auctions offer the opportunity to think about what you would have bought yourself with a certain amount of money at your disposal.
Last weekend's auctions gave rise to these considerations. At RM/Sotheby's on Saturday evening, a 1962 Fiat Jolly 600 (pictured above) was one of the last cars to be sold for USD 151,200 - quite a lot of money for a small car with a cut-off roof, one might think. Jollys always achieve high valuations, but this case is still surprising.
But what else could you have bought last weekend with USD 150,000?
How about a seven-passenger Cadillac V-16 as a Fleetwood sedan, for example. You could have saved USD 67,200 (and bought an Austin-Healey at the same time). And the black Cadillac had a 16-cylinder engine with a displacement of 7.4 liters and was advertised with a mileage of just 13,000 km.
An alternative would have been the youngtimer Toyota Supra Twin Turbo from 1993 with a removable roof, which could have been taken home for USD 137,200.
For those who preferred a more classic look, the orange-colored De Tomas Pantera L from 1973, which changed hands for USD 145,600, might have been a better choice.
But of course you could also have bid at Gooding on Friday, where a restored 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo went for USD 112,000.
For USD 150,000 (and less), you could have chosen from several Jaguar E-Type and XK variants at Bonhams , and a few Ferrari sports cars would also have fitted into the budget. But just ... if ...
P.S. We will, of course, provide the analyses of the RM/Sotheby's and Gooding & Co auctions in Amelia Island later.
