The cars that should have been built ...

No, there was never officially an estate version of the Ford Lotus Cortina ex works. But it would have been a hot car. The powerful engine from the Lotus Elan combined with a practical family car with cargo space and rear doors - this recipe could have been the perfect predecessor to the RS2, S4 and co. There is at least one conversion, which will go under the hammer at RM/Sotheby's on the occasion of the Elkart auction .
Something similar would have been conceivable with the BMW M3 E30. After all, there was also a convertible, and the fender extensions would certainly have looked good on the E30 Touring, although it was a five-door model. But you could have built a three-door estate. And then do the same thing again on the E36. The conversion would have been even easier here.
Mercedes fans might have liked a 500 TE, preferably assembled by Porsche, like the first 500 E back then.
A Ferrari 365 GTC/4 Spider was never available ex works either. In this case, at least the "cut-ups" created a private alternative. We reported on it.
And was a VW Golf GTI Variant ever sold? No, but it could certainly have been sold to men and women.
The open-top Matra Murena was never built either, although I already had it on my drawing pad in the 1980s. But it never came.
