A car body is more than just a few sheets of metal welded together. The self-supporting body was one of the great achievements of automobile construction in the 20th century, but it really began to catch on in the late 1950s and 1960s. Less weight, more torsional rigidity and lower material costs were all in its favor.
However, it was much more challenging for engineers to design. This is why new tools were used, such as the "see-through tests" at Dodge in 1960 shown in the picture, which were made possible with the help of a plastic model of the car.
