Are neoclassicals above the general ups and downs of classic prices?
Neoclassic cars enjoy strong demand, as the results of auctions continually document. But how has one of the best-known neoclassic cars, the BMW Z8, fared over the last few years?
If you analyze the auction results ofthe last few years, you can see that the average prices offered rose until 2016/2017, but have since fallen again somewhat. However, the slump is not drastic; in fact, BMW Z8s are still being traded well above the original price at the time and the average of the last six bids was around EUR 160,000. However, the days when EUR 250,000 or more was paid for a Z8 seem to be over. However, these were probably absolute exceptions anyway. Currently, prices seem to be comparatively stable and the BMW Z8 does not appear to be experiencing the kind of downward slide seen in certain other classic cars.
However, whether this finding can also be applied to other neo-classics depends very much on how often they were built, what status they achieved and whether they have not long since been eclipsed by other products (of the same brand). At least the BMW Z8 never had this problem, as it neither received a clear successor, nor does one appear to be planned ...
