Turning racing success into vehicle sales has always been a goal of car manufacturers. And so, on the basis of the DTM successes from 2000 to 2003, a road coupé called the Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG was created, limited to 100 units, which skillfully combined dynamics, handling and suitability for everyday use. Mercedes-Benz dominated the "new" DTM, short for "German Touring Car Masters", from 2000 onwards. Bernd Schneider was the champion in 2000, 2001 and 2003, and the Stuttgart-based company even won the one-make championship from 2000 to 2004. So it made sense to celebrate the successes with a "production" model. And so the Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG was born. The old DTM (German Touring Car Championship) had already been buried in 1994, the subsequent ITC (International Touring Car Championship) led to cost excesses and only existed until 1996, when it took its first break. Opel showed a potential DTM racing car of the future as early as 1998, but the "Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters" only crowned its champion in 2000, with three brands: Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Opel.
