A Beetle with four doors?
08/06/2013
At first we think, aha, a beetle, we know it. But then, there's something wrong. What are those extra door handles doing behind the driver's door?
In fact, the Rometsch company built a handful of four-door Beetles as cabs in the 1950s. The wheelbase was extended by 27 centimetres, the front doors were shortened and two additional doors were fitted at the rear. Thanks to more length and a lower seat bench, VW cab passengers could enjoy a higher level of comfort. However, it was not the need for comfort that triggered the four-door Beetle, but Berlin laws that only allowed cabs with four doors.
Incidentally, the 1952 Rometsch cab shown here was exhibited at the Classic Days Schloss Dyck. The extensively illustrated report can be found here .
