The variability and practicality of the Renault 16
Between 1965 and 1980, Renault built the R16, which was characterized by a hatchback that was still unusual for the class and above-average interior variability. This was based on the fact that the rear seat could not only be locked in various positions, but could also be removed completely in a few simple steps. This created a storage space of up to 1,600 liters.
Renault liked to play up the advantages of the space concept in its advertising. For example, the various configurations were explained, e.g. the different luggage storage variants, the rally rest position or the full bed variant. There was even a baby transport variant in which a closed and safe compartment could be created for the small child between the front seat and the luggage compartment.
Additional space for passengers could also be created at the front by using the steering wheel gearshift, which was retained until the end of production. With 1.85 million R16s produced, the practical hatchback Renault was also an above-average success.
