Summary
As soon as British Leyland was launched in 1968, there were problems on the sales front. The technically advanced ADO-16 models (the Austin 1100 and its derivatives) sold quite well to private buyers. However, the simpler Ford Cortina dominated the lucrative company fleets. At the time, BLMC had no model of its own to compete with the Ford. Under time pressure, a suitable car had to be developed quickly - the Morris Marina.

He was certainly a brilliant engineer, but there was one thing Alec Issigonis couldn't do: build cars on a budget. The result was that most of the models he penned for the British Motor Corporation BMC made little or no money. When Ford bought a Mini in 1960, dismantled it and reverse-engineered it, the conclusion was that BMC would probably have to go the extra mile in view of the price asked. And that's exactly what happened. Although the BMC models with front-wheel drive and transverse engines such as the Mini or 1100, and later the 1300 (ADO16), regularly ranked among the top positions in the British registration statistics, these cars did not make any real money.
