In 1964, the Irishman Hopkirk won the Monte Carlo Rally with his English co-driver Liddon. Second place went to the actually faster Ford Falcon with disc brakes and plastic bodywork, which was ranked behind the Mini due to its poorer comparative coefficient. Nevertheless, the victory of the small Mini in a thoroughly impressive field of vehicles, which also included several Alpine, Lancia, Mercedes, Saab and Volvo cars, is of course surprising. Our report attempts to answer how such a small car was able to win against the rally series winners of the time, Saab, Volvo, but also Ford, Citroën and Mercedes. Finally, the gallery shows Hopkirk's Mini back then and today.
