Design more beautiful then than now?

BMW has just presented the new 7-series in ICE and E versions (G70), i.e. with gasoline engines (Internal Combustion Engine = ICE) or as I7 with electric drive.
If you look at the first press photos, you may think back wistfully to earlier 7-series generations, such as the airy and elegant E38, built from 1994 to 2001. Large window areas, a (comparatively) compact kidney grille and a weight mostly under two tons were typical for it.
The new G70 no longer weighs less than two tons; even the 735i has an unladen weight of 2075 kg, with a permissible gross weight of 2785 kg. With the i7 xDrive 60, the kerb weight is 2640 kg or 3.25 tons gross vehicle weight.
And this weight is also visible on the outside: depending on the perspective, the "new one" looks very massive, with a huge kidney grille and light slits that make the front look even beefier and more aggressive. It is also due to the dimensions: The G70 is almost 5.4 meters long, 1.95 meters wide and 1.544 meters high - in short, huge.
The almost 30-year-old predecessor was a much friendlier car with a low waistline, large (almost round) headlights (eyes) and simple elegance. Thanks to its much more compact dimensions (4.99 meters long, 1.86 meters wide and 1.43 meters high), it appeared much more graceful by nature, even in the long version shown here, which was even more expansive.
But that was just the way it was back then ...
