The Tyrrell 012 in green

In the early 1980s, the Tyrrell team was one of the fastest contenders in Formula 1. Thanks to money from clothing manufacturer Benetton, it was able to invest in a new car designed by Maurice Philippe. It was the first Tyrrell to be built largely with carbon fiber. The wheelbase was 2642 mm.
The 540 kg Tyrrell 012 was introduced in the 1983 season and was used until the first races of the 1985 season.
Stefan Bellof, Martin Brundle and Mike Thackwell were among those at the wheel. Despite the very talented drivers, the Tyrrell with its Coswroth DFY engine, which Mario Illien had helped to develop, hardly stood a chance against the powerful turbo engines of the competing cars. With 520 hp, there was no chance against 800 or more turbo hp, despite the consistent design.
In its green Benetton livery, the Tyrrell 012 still looks attractive today, as the photos by Stuart Adams in a collection of imagesshow .
