A day with Jacky Ickx
03/02/2022
For decades, my father and I have followed the careers of racing greats around the world and captured them in photographs. The satisfaction is great when they themselves show great enthusiasm for our life's work. We are talking here about all the racing drivers we have had the privilege of photographing over 70 years. The Belgian Jacky Ickx (two-time F1 world championship runner-up in 1969 and 70, as well as six-time Le Mans winner) is just one of them, whom I unfortunately never had the chance to meet in person during his active days. But now he invited me to Brussels and after more than five hours, including lunch, we said goodbye like long-time friends.
He is one of the few people who can properly assess the work of everyone involved: "We drivers only finish what all the engineers and mechanics have worked hard for months, day and night. In the end, however, only we drivers reap all the laurels of an entire team, which I don't think is right. Even all the photographers and journalists deserve a big thank you, because their work brings our sport to the whole world."
Thank you, Jacky!
