Simplex equals simpler? Simple operation ... (at the Techno Classica 2022)
The Mercedes Simplex models, built between 1902 and 1910, were characterized by their simplified operation, which also gave them their name.
However, anyone taking a closer look at the vehicle on display at the Techno Classica in Essen, a Mercedes Simplex from 1907 with a 5.3-liter four-cylinder engine and 35 hp, would not first think of simple operation. There are five pedals/buttons in the footwell (pictured above), on which the brave chauffeur probably had to work almost like on a church organ keyboard to make the car behave as expected.
The Simplex really did simplify driving, because "automatic" disengagement and braking of the drive shaft when the gearshift was operated relieved the driver of some of the work, according to the description at the motor show. An experienced Simplex chauffeur would probably have to explain to us how this simplification fitted in with the five pedals.
In any case, some things in the cockpit don't look simple at all ...
